Due to high mountains and dense
forests, Jiuhuashan Geopark is an ideal habitat for wildlife. There are 253
species of animals, including 13 species of amphibians, 24 species of reptiles,
168 species of birds and 48 species of beasts.
There are four species of the first-class
national protected animals in Jiuhuashan Geopark, including Cervus nippon, Muntiacus crinifrons, Syrmaticus
ellioti, and Neofelis nebulosi;
seven species as the second-class national protected animal: Macaca arctoides, Cynops orientalis, Platysternon
megacephalum, Macaca mulatta, Manis pentadactyla, Viverricula indica, Capricornis
sumatraensis; six species as the third-class national protected species: Hydropotes inermis, Naemorhedus goral, etc.
The most
common animals in Jiuhuashan are Cyanopica cyana (Fig.1) and Macaca
arctoides (Fig.2), etc. there are three Macaca arctoides population active areas, namely, Baisui Palace,
Ganlu Temple and Tiantai Scenic area, with a total number of 300. Cyanopica cyana is the provincial bird
of Anhui Province and also the first-class protected wild animal in Anhui Province.
A Cyanopica cyana can catch 15
thousand pine caterpillars a year and control 50-100 mu of forest pests. It is
a great hero of the forest protection in Jiuhuashan Geopark.
